About Us

RMA is the warm African sunrise that welcomes warmth, comfort and care to the lives we touch. Just like parents who care for their children, the brand promise of RMA is to be caring and compassionate so that clients can go through life’s challenges a little bit easier.

Who We Are

For over 130 years, Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) has been a leader in administering COID worker’s compensation benefits in South Africa, supporting individuals and families affected by work-related injuries and diseases.

Operating under the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA), we serve Class IV (Mining) and Class XIII (Iron, Steel, Metal and related industries), offering comprehensive claims management that includes medical cost coverage, disability payments, and pensions. Furthermore, we conduct risk assessments, rate determinations, invoicing and collections to ensure seamless, end-to-end claims administration for our clients.

Using our proprietary IT system, RMA ensures efficient and compliant management of worker’s compensation claims, meticulously tailored to meet the complex regulatory requirements of COIDA. Not only does this advanced system streamline our operations, but is also available to external clients, who benefit from its robust capabilities in claims processing, data management, and compliance checking.

Our specialised insurance products provide 24-hour injury coverage, extending protection to employees even outside of COIDA’s standard scope. This bridges essential gaps, ensuring that our client’s employees are safeguarded around the clock, reinforcing our commitment to comprehensive, compassionate care.

Founded on 1 June 1894, The Rand Mutual Assurance Company Limited (RMA) is a non-profit mutual assurance organisation which is owned by its policy holders. RMA operates in terms of section 30 of the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, 130 of 1993 as amended, under license from the Minister of Labour. The RMA Group also operates under both short and long-term insurance licences issued by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA).
RMA is a Level 1 contributor to B-BBEE.

Our Heritage

Founded in 1894 by three mining companies, Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) was established as a mutual assurance company to administer workers' compensation for South African mining employees.

RMA became a public company in 1899 and later received a COIDA license to provide compensation benefits, initially for the mining sector (Class IV) and later expanding to include the iron, metal, and steel industries (Class XIII). In 2015, all employers in these sectors were transferred to RMA, and today we cover over one million lives.

With a commitment to compassionate care, we go beyond compliance to ensure beneficiaries and their families receive the full support they need following work-related injuries or diseases.

Governance

RMA prides itself on living the principles of sound corporate governance and has implemented numerous structures to ensure that the necessary checks and balances are in place. The Board is the custodian of the Group’s governance framework which is formalised in its charters, policies and operating procedures.

These governance processes are regularly reviewed to take into account both the changing regulatory environment and best practice. The Board’s focus on the application of sound corporate governance principles has been unwavering. The governance processes and structures are regularly reviewed.

RMA acknowledges the significance of the role it plays in the lives of its many stakeholders and the importance of remaining sustainable and embracing the principles of governance best practice.

There are many sources that inform the governance structures of RMA, most notably being the Companies Act of 71 of 2008, as amended, specifically the provisions applicable to the public companies, the King IV Report, the Insurance Act and the Board Notice 194 of 2017 which stipulates the governance and risk management structures for insurers published by the FSB in early 2018.

Active Citizenship

RMA lives by its caring and compassionate way. We see it as a privilege to help communities further their skills. We enjoy seeing people being educated, reaching for their dreams and achieving their goals. We live to see the joy on people’s faces when they’re empowered and improve their standard of living. Lending a helping hand is what warms our hearts.

Corporate Social Investment can have a significant impact on South African society, offering opportunities for both economic and social progress. RMA understands the impact it has on its pensioners by investing in their skills development. The education, experience and abilities of an RMA pensioner not only enhances their own lives but also adds economic value to their dependants, communities and the economy as a whole.

We believe that through education and training, enterprise development and the building of relevant infrastructure we can create sustainability.

RMA’s CSI policy renders support to the following three key areas:

Education: early childhood development, specific interventions at primary and high school level and Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET)
Health: disabled people, HIV/Aids and infrastructure/equipment
Social Development: poverty alleviation, women and children at risk and capacity building

In addition to the mobile prosthetic and orthotic clinic and the regular clinics held for pensioners, RMA also has a tracing programme that traces the beneficiaries of employees who are either injured or who have died as a result of a work-related injury. RMA goes the extra mile to ensure that these beneficiaries are found in order for them to receive the relevant pension and other benefits.

RMA has funded numerous projects through its social fund.

"Sometimes, it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom."
- Nelson Mandela

Financials

RMA is a financially sound company which continues to meet and exceed its legislated solvency requirements.

The Board and management of RMA remain conscious of their responsibility to ensure the financial ability of the organisation to pay benefits to those who have suffered injury or disease in the work place and to their beneficiaries, in the case of a fatality.

While the publication of an integrated report is only a requirement for listed companies, we believe that integrated reporting supports the corporate values of the RMA Group and offers a platform to provide clear and concise information to all stakeholders.

The concepts of strategy, risk, performance and sustainability are inevitably linked and we thus strive to report across these areas in order to provide stakeholders with a true picture of the company.

We believe that our report goes a long way to meeting the requirements of integrated reporting, most importantly in providing both historic and anticipated information about the Group in a clear, accurate and transparent manner, enabling all our stakeholders to gain insight into the business of the Group.

The full financial statements of the Group have been independently audited by Deloitte and are available on request to all our stakeholders.
