Happy birthday RMA!
Today marks 122 years since the founding of the Rand Mutual Assurance Company Limited (RMA) in 1894.
Identifying a need to help care for miners who were injured while on duty, RMA was founded in 1894 by three mining companies on the Witwatersrand as a non-profit mutual assurance company.
The last few years have seen the Labour Ministry extending RMA’s Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA) licence to include to the iron, metal, steel and related industries, with effect from March last year.
In April, RMA also celebrated the realisation of a long-cherished dream as Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant officially launched the 120-bed Rand Mutual Care Facility, in Welkom, to provide better long-term treatment and care for seriously injured RMA beneficiaries.
RMA remains a mutual association whose policyholders, namely the employers who buy policies for their employees, are the shareholders of the company. The employees of the companies are the beneficiaries of the policies and, in the event of fatalities, their dependants become the beneficiaries.
Together with our members and partners, we celebrate this 122nd birthday by reaffirming our commitment to assuring peace of mind to the million-plus insured lives under our management. Here’s to the next 122 years of caring, compassionate compensation!
